  24. About the Mailing List

  27. This list is designed to bring together all GEM programmers in order to
  28. establish a 'style guide'. The first topic will be keyboard shortcuts
  29. standards.

  31. Once a 'style guide' is agreed, I will make sure it is published in several
  32. magazines, PD libraries and ftp sites. WIth a bit of luck we'll reach such
  33. agreement.

  35. A note from the admin

  38. This list is a free service and I cannot warrant for anything that has been
  39. said in the list, I will however kindly ask that this list should not be
  40. filled with:

  42. 1. flames, accusations or abusive language
  43. 2. advertisement or forsale posts
  44.  
  45. I will also kindly ask that you do not subscribe with a wrong email
  46. account (make sure there are no typos) that I need to approve, if a message
  47. get's bounced I will receive the bulk of bounced messages, and I will
  48. delete that person from the list if the messages bounce for longer than
  49. 3 days. If you are going to lose your account for whatever reason please
  50. unsubscribe. I will post in comp.sys.atari.st the bounced message people
  51. so that they may be able to get back to me if there was a mistake.

  53. There are no set rules in this gem-list other than what is considered
  54. standard "netiquette", I will also not tolerate any bashings on anyone
  55. or any company on this particular list, constructive criticism is one
  56. thing, destructive bashing and flaming is another.

  67. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOLLOWS
  68.  
  69. The GEM user interface has recently matured into a generally
  70. non-modal, multi-tasking environment. Thanks to many developers
  71. such as 2B (Mag!X), Gribnif (Geneva) and authors of many
  72. excellent GEM programs (mainly in Germany, but also in the US, UK
  73. and other countries) we now have a very nice environment to work
  74. with.
  75.  
  76. One of the main problems for users, which have been exprssed to
  77. me by many users is the lack of standards, or that there are too
  78. many standards. It seems the German programmers have got their
  79. keyboard shortcuts sorted, but some of their standards contradict
  80. the Atari Style Guide as published in the Atari Compendium and
  81. the developer docs from Atari.

  83. Since Atari do not seem to be getting invloved in this area, it's
  84. about time that some communication started between developers
  85. across the globe. The Atari market is too small for too many
  86. systems. Both Geneva and Mag!X should maintain a high degree of
  87. compatibility, and authors of programs should do as much as
  88. possible to keep to the standards.

  90. The problem is now to agree on a standard interface, and the
  91. first topic I would like to discuss is the issue of keyboard
  92. shortcuts. I have laid out a proposal for a standard and have
  93. discussed it at length on CIX - the UK main BBS for ST
  94. users/programmers. My proposal is a PROPOSAL, I do not wish to
  95. dictate my ideas. I just want a standard to work to.

  97. I invite you alnog with many other developers to take part in
  98. this discussion. If we reach agreement, I will personally make
  99. sure that the standard is published in several ST magazines,
  100. placed on FTP sites and is also available in a printed form at a
  101. minimal cost to cover printing cost.

  103. Yat Siu of Lexicor has been kind enough to allow use of his
  104. system to start a mail list for this purpose. I have to stress
  105. here that Lexicor do not have any 'special' interest in this
  106. discussion, although I am sure Yat will want to express his
  107. opinions just like everyone else. I urge everyone to put
  108. competition aside and to join the mail list. Once we got the
  109. keyboard shortcuts standardised we can look at universal
  110. implementation of the VA_START protocol, a FAX protocol, adding
  111. menu items to programs (Windows style), enhanced GEM Clipboard
  112. and anything else we think is useful.

  114. The mail list is ready for use, once there are enough people
  115. subscribed I will post my keyboard shortcuts proposal and
  116. discussion can start. I already have incorporated some
  117. ammendments suggested by Wilfried Behne (Mag!X, NVDI).
